It is common knowledge; mountain gorillas and chimpanzees carry close to 99% human DNA. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it uncertain how best to carry out gorilla trekking amidst cautions of social distancing yet it is very common for mountain gorillas to give a touch to their visitors
For some reason, gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and all other primate tracking activities were put on hold for the sake of the future of these primates. However after a number of inquiries and research; the Uganda wildlife Authority on 3rd September 2020 re-opened all the primate national parks in Uganda.
These parks include; Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Mgahinga gorilla national park, and Kibale forest national park. However besides the primate national park; Uganda wildlife authority put out these procedures to ensure safety during the new normal;
Guidelines And SOPs
- Mandatory temperature screening using non-contact infra-red thermometers at the key tourism gates of the different protected areas
- Mandatory hand washing/sanitizing at the entrances of all UWA premises and protected areas
- Wearing a face mask while inside the protected area
- Observing social distance
- All tourists going for primate tracking activities should carry at least two N95 masks or surgical masks or double-layered cloth masks with filters.
- Government guidelines for carrying half capacity in order to observe social distance shall apply to the use of vehicles and boats in the parks. These include concessionaire delivery vehicles.
- Saloon car vehicles shall not be permitted to carry out game drive activities in the protected areas.
- Visitors going to the parks are encouraged to carry their own hand sanitizer.
Can I go gorilla trekking in Uganda Now?
It is still impossible for foreigners to go gorilla trekking in Uganda since all the borders are still closed to tourists. However, we expect the airport to be open by the end of October 2020.
The good news is, anyone within Uganda’s boundaries can now go gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking in any park of their choice.
Can I go to Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest National Park?
Yes, you can go chimpanzee tracking in Kibale forest national park as long as you are within Uganda’s boundaries. The airport is still closed but we expect it to be opened before the end of October 2020
What if I booked gorilla or Chimpanzee permits for September, can I go gorilla trekking?
The answer remains the same; you can go gorilla trekking as long as you are already within Uganda boundaries. We recommend tourist to reschedule their September permits probably to November 2020 or any month beyond.
